I have a slight aversion to department stores. It’s not that I don’t like them, because they have everything you may need. The problem I have is the atmosphere. Most department stores set things up so that you want to stay; hence, you spend more money. It might just be me, but if I spend too much time in department stores, I begin to develop a headache, probably from eyestrain, and I begin to feel drained of energy. As much as I like to shop, I have to be careful where I go.

Department stores often have shiny floors, sparkling salespersons, and a dizzying array of goods. The high-end ones seem to go out of their way to make you feel like you are getting something special when you walk in the door. However, if one more person tries to spray perfume on me, I am going to scream. I try to avoid the cosmetics area for this very reason. I’m beginning to think the perfumes are also contributing to my headaches.

Perhaps another factor in my imminent headache is the lighting. It’s truly a thing to behold, but it hurts my head. If the lights are too bright, forget it, I’m out of there in ten minutes. Many stores use spotlighting to focus your attention on the merchandise they hope you will buy. If even one of these lights hit you in the eye at the wrong angle, you will be blinded for up to ten seconds, and even after that, you’ll be seeing stars. Perhaps I just don’t know where I am supposed to walk, but this is just entirely too much.

Department stores are great, however, if you don’t want to spend the whole day going in and out of specialty shops to get everything you need. It is a nice feeling to know you can spend time in just one, or maybe two department stores and you can find what you need. If one store does not have what you need, it’s rather simple to walk across the mall to find the one that does.

If you are like me, you love shopping, but sometimes, it is just too much. The good news is that many of your favorite department stores are now online, and you can shop in your pajamas if you want. Even better, if you buy something online that doesn’t work out as you had hoped, you can, in some cases, return the merchandise to your local branch of that department store. Just watch out for the perfumes, ok?
